General Features: Origin: Ushak, Western Anatolia, Ottoman Empire Period: Late 19th century (c. 1880–1900) Technique: Hand-woven Material: Wool warp, weft and pile Natural Dyes: Colored with natural dyes of plant and mineral origin Size 323 x 440 cm - 10'7 ft x 14'5 ft Patterns and Motifs: The central area (ground) of this carpet is a rich navy-blue tone and features traditional palmette, Rumi, stylized flower and leaf motifs arranged symmetrically. These motifs reflect the aesthetics of the Ottoman period and the theme of infinity frequently encountered in Islamic art. The patterns have a free but balanced arrangement, indicating that the carpet was woven in a free-drawn style. Border: The wide border of the carpet is decorated with classical Ushak patterns consisting of various geometric and floral forms on a vibrant raspberry-red background. The inner and outer guard stripes on both sides of the main border provide both aesthetic integrity and frame the motifs. Artistic and Collectible Value: This carpet has largely preserved the original technical and aesthetic features of its period. The slight tonal differences in color transitions ("abrash") are due to the effect of natural dyes and are an indication of the authentic structure of the carpet. The weaving density is low to medium, which is characteristic of Ushak carpets. The large size and composition of the carpet make it a work woven for use in ornate interiors of its period.
