Impressively large pre-Columbian coca bag. 44 x 24.5 inches! This is a classic Chuquibamba designed bag with nine pockets. ad 1000 - 1475. i have taken to calling it" Godzilla" because of its immense size. There are only a few known bags of this type and size - all in Peruvian Museums. This bag is stabilized to a backing cloth and ready for mounting to a frame for display. It was formerly in an old collection based in London. This is the largest ceremonial coca bag i have seen. The wonderful color quality and the state of preservation of its color is excellent. The weave is fine. This is a serious textile from the Andes. One can read about such things in a new and excellent publication by Mary Frame titled: Textiles Chuquibamba, 1000 - 1475 d.c.. i highly reccommend it as it is the first serious publication to address this group of Andean textiles and the culture that made them. i do have other bags and weavings made by this group available, but none so prodigious as this one.
