Very large and special Pre-Columbian bag with fantastic creatures filling the center band. Size: 20 x 12.5 inches. Peru a.d. 1000 - a.d. 1400. It was woven in a warp-face plain weave with complimentary warp-weave patterning. The animated figures on this textile vary from face to face on the bag. This design variation is a characteristic of Ichma weavings. Alpaca Fiber. No dyes were used in this weaving - all colors are from natural, undyed alpaca. This is not common for the type. The bag is supple and in very good condition. It has been professionally conserved and lined with cloth. This is an impressive piece in the flesh which over time has resided in several old and prominent collections before coming to the market again. Provenance on request.
