East anatolia , Erzurum
Carpet and kilim weaving in Erzurum and its surrounding area has a rich and deep-rooted history due to the region's ancient history and its location at the intersection of diverse cultures. This history bears the cultural traces of the Armenian and Turkish peoples who lived in the region.
Turkish and Armenian Traces in Erzurum Carpet Weaving
Throughout its history, Erzurum has been located on important trade routes, leading to intense artistic and cultural interactions.
The Bardız Kilim and the Göşken Kilim, two important carpet types from Erzurum, are continuations of this tradition. Some sources suggest that the Göşken Kilim originates from the Saka Turks who dominated the region. The Bardız Kilim is considered a continuation of Ottoman Palace carpets in terms of its weaving technique and motifs.
Eastern Anatolia and the Caucasus region, which includes Erzurum, is a region where Armenian and Turkish weavers have worked side by side for centuries. This has led to the mutual adoption of motifs and techniques over time. Animal figures and floral patterns reflecting the region's history are frequently seen in some Armenian carpet and rug traditions. Such motifs are also present in Erzurum rugs (especially the lion, bird, and rose motifs in the Bardız and Goşken rugs)...
