Fine Blue and Coral Dhurrie Rug
An exceptionally fine Indian cotton Dhurrie rug in blue and coral, with a highly unusual Lotto design* more commonly associated with early Turkish carpets. India, circa 1940. 275cm x 189cm (108 x 74 inches).
A beautifully drawn rug, with a superb spectrum of softly abrashed colours. The blue ground ranges through almost purple to turquoise and the incredible borders alternate between salmon and coral pinks.
Superb condition without damages or wear. Selvages original with touches of loss to the cotton. Ends with very short fringes. a couple of small marks along one edge (the top as hung in our images) and a very small loss to the top right corner. The reverse also displays well, with darker colours, but does have a small horizontal white paint mark to the top approx 2mm x 20mm. Overall clean, bright and presents beautifully. Please see all images for full condition.
*The name Lotto Carpet refers to a type of 16th/17th century Turkish carpet appearing several times in the works of Venetian painter Lorenzo Lotto. For an excellent reference, see the last images showing a 16th century Lotto rug sold at Christies which has a strikingly similar design
