Size ; 330x370 cm The Heritage of the Balkans: The Sarkoy Kilim While they take their name from the Şarköy district of Tekirdağ, these unique kilims represent a much broader cultural geography known as "Rumeli" (the Balkans). a Cultural Bridge: These weavings are a magnificent blend of traditions brought to Anatolia by Turkish migrants and the local Greek, Bulgarian, and Macedonian communities. They are the artistic soul of the Balkans, categorized globally as "Balkan-type Kilims." Mastery in Detail: Unlike many Anatolian rugs, Şarköy kilims are renowned for their exceptional fineness, often possessing the delicacy of a woven fabric. This is achieved by using incredibly thin, hand-spun wool (and sometimes silk). Signature Colors: The deep, "sour cherry" red seen in this piece is the hallmark of a true Şarköy. These rich tones are achieved through traditional natural root dyes, paired with deep indigo, forest green, and hints of mustard yellow. Symbols of Life: The intricate lattice patterns and floral motifs are far from accidental. The Tree of Life: Represents abundance, the continuity of lineage, and cosmic order. Stylized Florals: Motifs like tulips, carnations, and oil lamps reflect the Ottoman aesthetic influence in the Balkans. During their golden age in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these kilims graced the floors of palaces and mansions. Today, they stand as precious antiques—carrying the collective memory of the Thracian and Balkan people.
