Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Lilian, Iran
Dimensions: 72 x 585 cm
This late 19th century Lilian runner was woven in the Lilian region of Iran, an area known for producing refined village carpets with strong classical influences. Lilian carpets are closely associated with the Sarouk weaving tradition and are especially admired for their harmonious designs, high quality wool, and elegant proportions.
The design of this runner features a repeating central medallion layout arranged along the length of the field, creating a rhythmic and well balanced composition. The medallions are framed by stylized floral and botanical motifs, reflecting the Persian tradition of garden inspired ornamentation. The rich rose-red ground is complemented by deep indigo, soft blues, and ivory accents, giving the rug both warmth and visual depth.
The border is composed of multiple guard borders surrounding a main border decorated with continuous floral vines and rosettes, which neatly frame the central field and enhance the overall symmetry. The drawing is precise yet retains the charming character of village weaving, making the piece both elegant and authentic.
Woven with hand spun wool and natural dyes, this Lilian runner has a durable yet soft texture, ideal for long corridors or narrow spaces. Over time, the natural dyes have matured beautifully, resulting in a gentle patina that adds to the carpets historical character and aesthetic appeal.
Overall, this is a fine example of a late 19th century Persian Lilian runner, combining classical Persian design elements with the distinctive regional identity of Lilian weaving. It is a timeless piece that brings both history and understated elegance into any interior.
