Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Mudjur, Central Anatolia
Dimensions: 115 x 160 cm
This mid 19th century Mudjur prayer rug, woven in Central Anatolia, represents one of the most distinctive and expressive village weaving traditions of the region. Mudjur rugs are known for their bold architectural layouts, strong color contrasts, and deeply symbolic, almost graphic ornamentation.
The composition is organized around a stepped mihrab, rising sharply from a rich red field. The angular outline of the prayer niche, rendered in pronounced zigzag contours, gives the design a powerful architectural presence typical of Mudjur weaving. Within the field, a central tree like motif and small geometric devices evoke themes of life, protection, and spiritual continuity.
Above the mihrab, the rug features a hexagonal medallion panel, filled with stylized geometric elements, a characteristic feature seen in early Mudjur prayer rugs. The surrounding borders are densely decorated with repeating floral and geometric motifs, drawn in a lively, almost rhythmic manner, reflecting the strong village character of the piece.
The palette is dominated by deep madder red, complemented by dark indigo blue, soft green, ivory, and occasional touches of yellow. The wool pile and slightly irregular drawing further enhance the authenticity and age of the rug.
Overall, this Mudjur prayer rug is a fine example of mid-19th-century Central Anatolian village weaving, combining architectural clarity, symbolic depth, and a bold, unmistakable regional identity.
