Period: Mid 20th Century Origin: Kayseri, Turkey Dimensions: 113 x 173 cm This mid 20th century Kayseri silk prayer rug, woven in Central Anatolia, reflects the refined craftsmanship and elegant design language for which Kayseri workshops are well known. During this period, Kayseri silk rugs were highly regarded for their precise weaving, harmonious compositions, and their ability to blend classical Ottoman court aesthetics with local Anatolian character. The composition is structured around a tall and well defined mihrab, rising from a warm rust red field. Suspended from the apex of the mihrab is a finely drawn hanging lamp motif, symbolizing divine light and spiritual guidance. The simplicity of the central field is intentionally balanced, allowing the architectural clarity of the design to stand out. Above the mihrab, stylized tree and floral motifs fill the spandrels, while the lower section features small vase and blossom elements, reinforcing themes of devotion, continuity, and abundance. The borders are richly decorated with palmettes, rosettes, and repeating floral medallions, arranged in multiple guard stripes that frame the composition with rhythm and elegance. The color palette combines deep navy blue, soft gold, ivory, and subtle green tones with the glowing red field. The use of silk pile enhances the sharpness of the drawing and gives the rug a luminous surface that responds beautifully to light. This Kayseri prayer rug stands as a fine example of mid 20th century Turkish silk weaving, valued for its balanced design, symbolic richness, and refined execution, making it an appealing piece for both collectors and sophisticated interiors.
