Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Qashqai Tribe, Southwestern Iran
Dimensions: 102 x 178 cm
This late 19th century Qashqai rug is an outstanding example of Persian tribal weaving, reflecting the strong visual identity and symbolic richness of the Qashqai nomadic tradition from southern Iran.
The composition is organized around a vertical sequence of three large diamond shaped medallions, each filled with highly stylized geometric motifs and tribal symbols. The surrounding field is densely decorated with a wide variety of small motifs including animals, birds, flowers, stars, and abstract protective symbols, all arranged in a seemingly spontaneous yet balanced manner that is characteristic of Qashqai design.
The zigzag edged inner field creates a dynamic contrast against the darker ground, while the borders feature repeating geometric and floral elements that frame the composition with rhythmic precision. The drawing is bold and expressive, emphasizing clarity of form rather than symmetry.
The color palette is rich and lively, dominated by deep reds, indigo blues, dark browns, ivory, and accents of yellow, light blue, and green. The use of natural dyes gives the colors depth, warmth, and a beautifully aged patina.
Overall, this rug embodies the authentic spirit of late 19th century Qashqai weaving, combining powerful tribal expression, symbolic ornamentation, and strong decorative presence.
