Tibetan takyebs are decorative woolen ornaments, woven for use on horses and pack animals, which are constructed specifically to fit securely on the animal’s forehead. Often the design itself has an additional role as a talisman or ‘good luck charm’, and the design of this particular takyeb fits into that talisman category as it features the sacred Kalachakra symbol set against a red dyed background, arrayed around which are several flowers. Made during the early 1900’s it is tightly woven with both the warp and weft being wool, rich saturated natural dyes, is backed by blue cotton cloth and measures 23cm x 26cm (approximately 9in x 10in). It is professionally mounted on off-white / bone coloured canvas on a wooden frame that measures 37cm x 37cm (14.5in x 14.5in), but this could be easily removed if so desired. An exceptional piece in excellent condition that displays beautifully on a wall with its vibrant colours and symbolic motif remaining prominent.
