Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Keshan, Iran
Dimensions: 138 x 215 cm
This late 19th century Keshan rug is a sophisticated and highly characteristic example of classical Persian urban weaving. With its refined floral language, intricate curvilinear drawing, and harmonious composition, it reflects the master workshop aesthetics of the region with distinguished elegance.
The composition is built around a classic medallion-and-corner layout set against a rich crimson ground. At the heart of the design stands a complex, diamond-shaped central medallion anchored in deep indigo and ivory, adorned with detailed floral motifs. This principal element is surrounded by graceful Shah Abbasi palmettes, scrolling vines, and delicate floral sprays, giving the rug a sense of depth and infinite movement. The contrasting ivory spandrels (corners) echo the floral intricacy of the center, creating a perfectly balanced symmetry.
The border arrangement frames the field with architectural precision. The wide main border on a deep indigo ground displays repeating floral palmettes and sweeping arabesques, forming a majestic boundary. Detailed inner and outer guard stripes with delicate floral meanders contain the exuberant energy of the central field. The drawing is fluid and precise, clearly expressing the technical mastery and artistic vision of city workshop weaving.
The color palette is typical of the finest Keshan production, featuring deep madder reds, midnight blues, warm ivories, and subtle accents of soft greens and golds. The use of high-quality dyes has allowed the tones to mature beautifully, creating a lustrous and velvety patina on the surface.
Overall, this rug is an outstanding example of late 19th century Keshan weaving, distinguished by its noble character, intricate floral detailing, and enduring decorative presence.
