Period: Mid 19th Century Origin: Karachop, Southwest Caucasus Dimensions: 134 x 225 cm This mid 19th century Karachop rug is an outstanding example that reflects the powerful character and symbolic language of the South Caucasian weaving tradition in its purest form. Karachop rugs hold a distinctive position among Caucasian weavings with their bold geometric structures, archaic motif repertoire, and deep color contrasts. The composition consists of three main medallions aligned on a vertical axis. These stepped forms are enriched with tamga like protective symbols deriving from early Turkic tribal art. The ram’s horn and hooked variations seen at the centers represent strength, fertility, and continuity, while the surrounding star and cross-like devices create layers of apotropaic meaning. The main border, animated by repeated hook and arrowhead motifs, provides the rug with a rhythmic and almost architectural frame. The seemingly primitive yet highly intentional design language clearly reveals the ancient nomadic aesthetic of Karachop weavings. The wool quality and knot structure are fully consistent with the production characteristics of the region in the mid 19th century. The color palette is impressive with the depth of natural dyes: madder red, indigo blue, ivory, and earthy tones create powerful contrasts. The patina gained over time has endowed the surface with extraordinary character and warmth. Overall, this rug is an authentic Caucasian masterpiece with high collector value, embodying the early and mature features of the Karachop school. Stock No: 2524
