Period: Late 19th Century
Origin: Isfahan, Iran
Dimensions: 146 x 210 cm
This magnificent Isfahan rug, dating to the late 19th century, is an exceptional masterpiece from one of the most prestigious weaving centers in Persia. Isfahan rugs from this era are celebrated for their extraordinary finesse, technical perfection, and designs that draw directly from the classical Safavid aesthetic of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The design features a sophisticated Mihrab (prayer arch) composition, centered around an ornate, double-handled vase. From this central vessel, a highly intricate “Tree of Life” ascends, bursting with a lush array of flowering vines, delicate blossoms, and pair of large, gracefully curved paisley (boteh) motifs at the base. These elements fill the ivory field with a rhythmic, symmetrical elegance. The arch is defined by complex, layered spandrels in deep lapis and indigo tones, adorned with delicate floral arabesques that highlight the architectural grace of the prayer niche.
The color palette is remarkably refined and luminous, achieved through the expert use of natural dyes. The soft ivory ground provides a radiant stage for the rich madder reds, turquoise, and deep indigo tones of the floral patterns. This harmonious blend of colors, combined with the incredibly fine knot density typical of Isfahan workshops, gives the rug a painterly quality and a subtle shimmer.
The composition is enclosed by a series of grand borders. The primary border features a repetitive sequence of large floral palmettes and scrolling vines against a vibrant madder red ground, providing a majestic frame that balances the intense detail of the central field.
Overall, this late 19th century Isfahan rug is a work of supreme artistic and technical merit. Its classical proportions, symbolic motifs, and masterful execution make it a highly significant piece for serious collectors and a breathtaking center-piece for refined interiors.
