Period: 18th Century
Origin: Greece
Dimensions: 70 x 180 cm
This exceptional Greek textile, dating to the 18th century, is a remarkable survivor of the Mediterranean embroidery tradition. During this period, Greek island and mainland embroideries were highly prized for their vibrant color palettes, intricate needlework, and motifs that blended Byzantine, Ottoman, and Western influences into a unique regional aesthetic.
The design features a dense, rhythmic all over pattern of stylized floral rosettes and blossoms in rich shades of madder red and deep indigo blue. These floral elements are connected by delicate green vine scrolls, creating a continuous, garden like texture across the fildişi (ivory) linen ground. The repetition of circular flower heads is a classic characteristic of 18th century Greek embroidery, often symbolizing nature’s abundance and eternal renewal.
The color palette is classic and vibrant, achieved through the master use of natural dyes. The strong contrast between the fiery reds, cool blues, and earthy greens against the natural ivory background emphasizes the graphic clarity and handcrafted charm of the piece. The preservation of these colors over three centuries is a testament to the quality of the original materials and the skill of the artisan.
The composition is enclosed by a narrow, structured border that repeats the floral and vine motifs of the central field, providing a neat architectural frame. This border ensures visual balance, containing the exuberant energy of the central floral display.
Overall, this 18th century Greek textile is a masterpiece of historical needlework. Its powerful floral language, vibrant natural colors, and authentic folk spirit make it a highly collectible work of art, well suited to both private collections and refined, eclectic interiors.
