Period: Mid 19th Century Origin: Shirvan, Caucasus Dimensions: 103 x 166 cm This mid 19th century Shirvan prayer rug is a superlative example of the sophisticated geometric artistry from the Caucasus. Shirvan weavings from this period are highly prized for their fine weave, crisp draftsmanship, and a technical precision that distinguishes them from the more rugged styles of neighboring regions. The composition is centered around a tall, elegantly proportioned prayer niche or mihrab, set against a luminous ivory field. The interior of the niche is densely populated with a rhythmic lattice of stylized floral blossoms and geometric “boteh” variants, rendered with remarkable clarity. Above the arched mihrab, the spandrels are filled with complex tribal icons and miniature geometric repeats that add a sense of architectural structure to the spiritual design. The palette is exceptionally balanced, utilizing rich madder red, deep indigo, and golden yellow to articulate the fine details against the light ground. Framing the central field is a series of sophisticated borders that demonstrate the weaver’s mastery of graphic symmetry. The main border features a classic “Bakhtiari” or “Star” pattern, consisting of interlocking geometric rosettes and angular vine scrolls. Flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes with repeating floral and wave motifs, this border system provides a robust and formal finish. This mid 19th century piece stands as a testament to the cultural identity and technical excellence of Caucasian nomadic weaving traditions. Stock No: 1259
