Period: Early 19th Century
Origin: India
Dimensions: 178 x 180 cm
This rare, early 19th century Indian Kashmir shawl is an extraordinary masterwork of textile art, epitomizing the legendary luxury, unparalleled weave technicality, and elegant design lineage of the classic period of Kashmiri weaving. Hand woven using ultra fine, hand spun pashmina wool sourced from the downy undercoat of Himalayan mountain goats, this square shawl possesses a remarkably lightweight, soft, and fluid handle that mimics a textile drape of sheer silk. The central composition centers around an expansive, unadorned ivory cream field, providing a serene and minimalist canvas that beautifully emphasizes the dramatic floral border architecture framing the textile.
The inner canvas is flanked at three corners by substantial, inward facing boteh paisley medallions, each meticulously filled with microscopic flowering vines and abstract geometric details. Bordering this central clearing is an extensive, multi layered system of decorative panels. The wide horizontal and vertical margins feature prominent rows of larger, elongated boteh motifs, each curving gracefully at the tip and housing a complex inner matrix of polychrome blossoms. The incredible draftsmanship is brought to life by a sophisticated palette of historic vegetable dyes, blending soft shades of terracotta red, sky blue, muted violet, and golden ochre that mingle in a mosaic of twill tapestry weaving.
Exhibiting a wonderfully authentic antique patina, remarkably vibrant color preservation across its organic fibers, and a beautifully stable hand woven structure, this shawl carries a profound historical narrative. The crisp delineation of the borders, combined with the timeless elegance of the classical pashmina heritage, gives this piece a striking versatility, bridging antique textile connoisseurship with sophisticated gallery display. It stands as an outstanding, museum grade example of early 19th century South Asian art, bringing an immense sense of linear elegance, historic grandeur, and warm, authentic soul to any specialized collection or curated interior wall.
