Antique Ceremonial Embroidered Tirai Textile panel Sumatra Indonesia -
Beautiful, rare Sumatran embroidered ceremonial tirai, which translates to curtain. It is a textile valance either for a doorway, window, bed or throne. Possibly used for a wedding ceremony. Seems to be a velvet base with metal thread and silk floss embroidery, and small diamond shaped mirrors. Circa 1900, probably late 19th century.
Decent condition. There are quite a lot of holes, which are probably insect damage. There are no insects now. Some top edge holes are backed with red cloth. Pulled threads, embroidery losses, mirror cracks, etc. See photographs, which were taken outdoors without a flash on a partly cloudy day. If you would like more photographs, please message me.
The textile is backed by a linen or cotton fabric and attached to a tan backing fabric and a final white backing fabric. This was originally on a stretcher of 20” x 38”. It could be put back on a stretcher or on a firm board and framed under glass, maybe a shadow box. See photographs, which were taken outdoors without a flash on a partly cloudy day. If you would like more photographs, please message me.
Size: Actual textile is 14-1/4” x 33” long. The backing fabric is about 26” x 44” long.
