Back
This is a vintage Japanese indigo dyed furoshiki, or wrapping cloth. The cloth is comprised of four 14" panels of fabric which have been stitched together and decorated with a tsutsugaki rice paste before dying with a botanical indigo. The lighter blue areas were accomplished by carefully removing a portion of the rice paste and then re-dying, so that the two shades you see here could be accomplished.
The fabric has great hand and integrity and appears to be handwoven. It is in very good vintage condition. Though there is some light staining and a few worn areas, it does not detract from the overall atmosphere of the piece. There is handwriting visible in the white portions of the fan and a few boro repairs and mends.
