This is a Japanese farmer's jacket made of indigo dyed hemp. What is striking about this jacket is that the garment was first dyed to a pale indigo blue before the rice paste was applied. The jacket was then dyed several more times until a deep indigo color was achieved. The rice paste was then removed to reveal the pattern you see here.
There are two separate and complimentary patterns used within the garment, both created in the fashion described above.
This jacket is in pristine condition with no rips, tears, or stains and we can date this jacket to the late Meiji or early Showa period.
