This is a large, Japanese antique indigo dyed cotton noren from the Meiji period. The fabric itself is made of thick, hand spun, and hand woven cotton. It is dyed with natural indigo, and the resulting blue is warm and vibrant. In the center is a bold traditional crest dyed with tsutsugaki. The crest is known as four tilted spotted squares. This noren can be dated to the late 1800s (early Meiji period) and is in very good condition, save for some light discoloration which can be expected from a piece of this age. a great antique Japanese folk textile.
