Back
a huge old Bulgarian kozak felted wool sleeping rug. This is the largest kozak i came across on a recent trip to the mountain villages of south and central Bulgaria. It was made for a raised wooden sleeping platform in a traditional timber framed and stone house in Kotel, eastern Bulgaria.
The sleeping platform become a seating area during the day with cushions placed around the edge. The kozak is made in one piece from a thick layers of a soft goat hair weave left longer on one side (like a siirt blanket) on a heavy duty thick sheep wool warp and then felted.
They are no longer made in Bulgaria although a lighter is made in Romania using synthetically dyed wool. The kozak rug is up to 1cm thick and must have been very warm in snowbound winters. About 60/70 years old and in good condition. 270cm x 185cm. Worldwide shipping at cost €65.
