Beautiful Indian purple silk square and gold brocaded shawl originating from Varanasi in India. Varanasi or Benares in the region of Uttar Pradesh had made a specialty of this type of rich shawls fully gold brocaded on silk. They become the famous saris in the twentieth century. Large central field of small lattice diamonds with stylized pomegranates and gold twill weave borders. Four corners with palmettes highlighted with fuchsia and a stylized central medallion.
