This is a stunning and beautifully constructed long shibori work coat, or nagagi, from the Tohoku region of Japan.
This particular shibori style - crystal whites against deep botanical indigo - is known as Akita shibori. The design presented here suggests flower petals drifting in a stream. The petals of the flowers are made using a capping technique called boshi, while the undulating stream pattern is achieved through a kanoko shibori.
The cotton cloth itself is both hand spun and hand woven. The exterior cloth has been hand dyed with a natural botanical indigo, while the interior is lined with a medium tone indigo cloth.
The garment it in excellent condition and seems to be almost unworn.
An excellent collector's piece.
Early to mid 20th Century
