Kazak rug, Caucasian- beautiful old triple medallion rug with red field and guards giving a classic 'floating effect' with the delicate balance between motifs and red ground; this effect is compounded by the balanced drawing of the reciprocal red-to-blue hooks in the field and likewise within the guard bands, late 19th.century, 272 x 166cm. Worn but not tatty! Sides have been professionally restored (in part) say perhaps 30 years ago; requires a substantial amount of repiling, though wear is partially disguised by the presence of red wefts. Yellow and green are slightly 'sulphurous'in colour. Has small strip of fuchsine in chequered minor border at one end.
