an exceptional early east tarim basin rug. this kind of central medallion composed of 4 animals is well documented by early artefacts (mostly silver and silk) of the liao culture. a very small number of rugs bears also this design. please compare the drawing of this medallion with rb square nr. 170 from last may. the execution is here extremly fine achieving a stronger and controlled reciprocal effect, the drawing of the trees on both sides of the center is quite unique and not unreminiscent of early felt art. Please note how well the curves and proportions are executed all over the rug. though in poor condition, the whole design is entirely readable. 180x 90cm.
