Aymara Ceremonial coca cloth (Tari or Incuna) Bolivia, Southern Altiplano, Salinas Garcia de Mendoza Region. 19th century. Size: 14 x 14 inches. This sweet little piece is from an area on the Southern Altiplano where weavers employ a unique range of colors found no where else in Bolivia. Miniature Coca cloths like this example were used in various ceremonies (like the "animal increase rite") for presenting offerings, displaying amulets and fetishes or other ritual paraphernalia, especially the sacred coca leaves. Miniature coca cloths are rare and examples from this region almost non existent. Although rather unassuming, small weavings like this held great significance for Aymara ritual practitioners.
