Very finely painted and expressive 18th-19th century Mongolian Buddhist tsakli miniature painting of Yamantaka, Vajrabhairava with his consort Vajravetali. Mineral pigments and gold on woven canvas with Tibetan inscription on the reverse, with the first Tibetan character ཨོཾ the seed syllable aum, 75x68mm.
Vajrabhairava is the wrathful manifestation of Manjusri, the wisdom aspect of the Buddha. Tsongkapa, founder of the Tibetan Buddhist Gelug tradition, made Vajrabhairava the fundamental meditation practice. Along with Chakrasamvara and Guhyasamaja, Vajrabhairava is one of the principal three meditational deities of the Gelug school.
