katazome textile p a n e l #2, Japan, Meiji (circa 1900), cm188x31. Katazome cloth showing a repeated pattern of cranes and clouds on a dark indigo ground. This p a n e l most undoubtedly would have been part of a futon cover offered to a bridal couple as part of their trousseau, as was the custom during Meiji Era: cranes, as they symbolize long life, also symbolize conjugal fidelity, since cranes mate for life. The cotton is homespun and dyed in botanical indigo and orange. Excellent condition.
