No doubt one of the first forms of weaving involved a pre-loom interlacing technique called twining. Couple that with a painted stripe made with crushed stone pigment and you have what is probably the most ancient method of textile manufacture and decorating, as represented by this exceptional Highland ritual apron. It is at once the most archaic and the most contemporary form of woven art.
