Suzani Border with Human Figures,
Bokhara, Central Asia,
Cotton, silk,
Circa 1800,
110x11.5 inches/279x29 cm,
The name suzani comes from the Persian word, meaning needle-work. The rarest and most sought after are the large medallion type that are known to have very special borders, as presented here. The large flowers and serrated blue flowers would be beautiful enough by any standards but in this case we discover great charm with the inclusion of small human figures with water vessels. This piece offers fabulous colors.
