Dated 1807 Alpujarran rug (Granada, Spain). Inscribed "Por Bartolomé González. Se hizo año de 1807" ("By Bartolomé González. It was made in the year 1807"). This rug is very well executed. Alpujarran rugs were domestic items generally woven for personal use, a tradition that remained in Southern Spain (the muslims stayed for 700 years i n Spain). Often they were woven as part of the dowry as it could be in this case where the name is woven. Woven in two parts. The border are pomegranates, the symbol of Granada. The central field shows islamic influence in the use of the stars and the latice work. Linen ground with looped design in wool. Repaired and rewoven in areas, but in very good overall condition. Of great ethnographic value as there are not many of this age that survived to our days. 210x174 cms More info on Alpujarran rugs in http://primitiverug.com/alpujarra-rugs/
