The design of this shaggy antique Uzbek sleeping rug (Julkhyr) is stunning, very rough, bold and archaic, featuring a huge central motif in the form of concentric squares.
The border, in a way, reproduces the central motif in a more simplified fashion. With a restricted color palette that includes terracotta, ivory, blue, green and brown, the weaver has achieved a elegant yet, and at the same time, dramatic effect.
The finely woven kilim terminations at both ends contrast with the primitive look of the rug. The warp has been woven with wool of different shades (ochre, grey, terracotta and black) as can be seen in the photos of the reversed rug.
In perfect condition with long hair all over the surface and with the kilims also intact and in mint condition.
All dyes are natural. This rug would be worthy of any antique rug collection.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 170×115 cms
Origin: Uzbek tribes from Afghanistan
Date of weaving: 19th century
