Sumba - Indonesia. Man’s shoulder or hip cloth, called hinggi, it’s woven in two parts and the size is cm 135x230 ca. They were used in sets, one around the hips and the second around the shoulders during important events and ceremonies. (metmus) It’s a cotton ikat dyed textile filled with all kind of noble symbols, like royalty, power, fertility, good luck, wealth. This hinggi was bought in Northern Pakistan from an Afghani rug dealer in the early 80s. The story was that the grandfather went on haj to mecca in the early days of the 19th century and bought it from an Indonesian pilgrim. It has been carefully taken care and it’s after over 100 years still in very good condition. If interested please email carlokocman@gmail.com
