An antique Turkman Labijar from Afghanistan, woven with finely spun wool.
The design is composed of motifs arranged in horizontal bands running across the surface of the kilim, alternating with plain bands accented by a thin decorative stripe. The weaver used top-quality wool and exquisite dyes, achieving an unusual greenish-blue tone, deep blue, and warm yellow—hues rarely found in Afghan pieces.
This kilim is borderless, except for a narrow plain strip along the longer side, woven in undyed goat hair in a dark brown tone.
Although our sources in Afghanistan told us this kilim is Turkman, it could also be Uzbek. The Uzbeks have also woven very fine, simple kilims in Labijar in the past. Horizontal bands of undecorated weave are found in natural light brown and ivory-white wool tones, with bands coloured in pale golden yellow, light indigo blue and a brown madder red. Random stripes of lozenge, chevron or arrowhead shapes run across the width of the kilim and there are no borders; these flatweaves are well constructed with reinforced selvedges and horse hair spun into the plain- coloured warps.
Labijar means “next to the canal” or “small river.” This well-irrigated area, encompassing four villages near the Darya-e Safid River close to Sherberghan, was deeply influenced by the occupation and colonization of Alexander the Great and the subsequent Seleucid Empire.
