Northern Vietnam Tai Dam scarf This Girl is from the Tai Dam tribal group in Northern Vietnam and is wearing the traditional “hat” called Pieu scarf. It is made in cotton dyed black with indigo and embroidered with colorful silk threads. Tai Dam belief holds that the Piêu scarf safeguards the soul. In funeral rites, a person's scarf is often cut in half: one half covers the deceased's face to lead their soul to the afterlife, while the surviving spouse keeps the other half to be reunited in the next world.
