An antique chinese carpet Ningxia (Ninghsia) Region (Western China).
A so called "pollar carpet", featuring a dragon motif set against a golden yellow background.
In the grand halls and monasteries of Western China and Tibet, such carpets were displayed and utilized to adorn pillars and in some instances to cover ceilings. With pillar carpets, the design only truly makes sense when the piece is wrapped around a column of the appropiate diameter.
When positioned in this way, the figure of the dragon completes its form, appearing to ascend in a spiraling motion.
The particular piece depicts a Celestial Dragon, distinguished by its blue head, horns, round eyes, barbels, and falcon-like talons. As is customary, the dragon is depicted in pursuit with great vigor of a "Jin (chin) motif, also known as the "Flaming Pearl".
Buddist symbols interspersed with cloud bands-as well as bat motifs symbols.
Beneath this a Tibetian inscriptionn bears the translation: i convey this message to the monks.
The upper border features two typical meander bands and a pearl-motif guard stripe.
Age: circa 1900
Dimensions : 3,90 x 1,34 m (approx. 12'10" x 4'5")
Material: wool pile on a Cotton foundation, featuring magnificent natural dyes and soft, luxurious wool
Condition: relatively good, sound overall, with only minimal surface irregulaities.
The ends and edges are relatively well preserved, as such pieces were historically used for decorstive purposes and as coverings rather then being subjected to heavy foot traffic.
A rare and highly sought-collectors item, distinguished by its fantastic design, striking presence, and superb coloration.
