Duane and his wife Flo opened their shop in Albuquerque New Mexico in March 2000. In their first couple of years they decided to focus mainly on the carpets produced by various groups reviving the use of natural dyes in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and most recently Azerbaijan. Duane's educational background was in Asian and Islamic history. Prior to going into business he was an instructor at Ohio Wesleyan University and spent a year work in journalism in Hungary. Old World Imports stocks a limited range of antique carpets and textiles, contemporary textiles, and ethnographic jewelry.
